Practicing Meditation

Incorporating meditation into your daily experience may seem very much out of the question for most of you.  But let’s examine first what this means before you dismiss the idea completely.

Meditation can mean a number of things to different people. Taking a few minutes out of each day to reflect, to debrief from a hectic day, or give thanks for the blessings which abound in our lives.

In the western world, one of the most common forms of meditation would be prayer and attending church on Sundays. Saying one’s nightly prayers before heading to bed was taught and encouraged to most young children. This practice formed the habit of taking those last few moments of wakefulness to connect with and find peace as one headed off to bed.  Attending church too, gave a quiet time to think of and participate in higher ideals than that of the daily toil of living in a world that was physically demanding of everyone. For many the only time they had to escape the drudgeries of living was when they took the few minutes before bed and the hour or two on Sundays to sit in a quiet, clean and pleasant place in a church.

With our world having changed so very much over the last century, for many the expansion of our knowledge of all things has changed the way we go within and connect to a higher ideal.  The shrinking globe has brought all cultures closer together and our understanding of more than one spiritual practice has seen many people embrace other religious practices as well as abandoning them all together.

The almighty dollar and creating the good life has left many of us without any form of connecting to any spiritual beliefs at all.  As we all need a spiritual connection as much  as our physical well being, many of us have been starving for some method of again incorporating a spiritual component back into our lives.

There is more than one method of doing this.  Ram Dass in his book “Journey of Awakening” gave examples of many different forms of meditation.  For one person it may be taking the traditional method of prayer and reintroducing back into one’s life. For another it may be taking a daily walk in nature letting the surroundings bring one into a state of peacefulness.  Another it may be that daily jog and so on.  We all need a sense of spirituality in our lives as much as we need the air we breathe.

Meditation is simply the practice of allowing yourself the time to be, breathe and know you are one with all and that all is part of you. Finding this simple truth and experiencing it on a heart or feeling level, gives one a sense of peace, understanding and inner knowing that is unshakable.

One method of meditation is simply to sit or lay comfortably and follow your breath in and out. Letting go of all thought and focusing on the breathe will bring one into a state of meditation.

Another method is adding a visualization in your mind or imagining a scene which brings you to a state of happiness and joy.  Holding onto those feelings of love again allow yourself to follow your breath in and out.

One visualization, that I highly recommend is that of visualizing the white light. Following is a short form of this visualization you may want to try.

White Light Meditation

Visualize a golden ball of pure light energy.
Watch as it radiates energy throughout the universe

planet earth now merging with the light.

you are drawn to the light as a source of clear, healing and balancing.

The closer you move to the light
the more your sense your burdens lifting.

As you merge with the light you become
One with the Universe.

A sense of compassion and unconditional loves envelopes you
as the light embraces your soul.

Remain in this light
as long as you like.

Its energies have now become part of your experience.

The benefits are most rewarding for the small efforts which you may choose to add to your daily or weekly routines. By encompassing one of these methods you may very well bring a sense of well being and contentment to your daily existence which you may have been missing and aching for, for a very long time.
